EQ of The Week

This week our first Purple Paw Award went to a large group of 3rd grade girls for their collaborative video on healthy fruits and veggies.  The second Purple Paw Award goes to scholar in Mrs. Robinson's class for her poster on how many servings of fruit & veggies you should eat a day.  Lastly, a Purple Paw Award goes to a pair of girls in Mrs. Darling's class for their poster on their favorite healthy fruits.  Nice work everyone!!!

Essential Questions of the week January, 27 2014

1. Are all fruit juices the same?

No all fruit juices are not the same.  Drink fruit juice made from 100% fruit in order to get the maximum amount of vitamins and nutrients.  Many drinks contain lots of added sugar and no real health benefits.  It's best to only get a couple servings a day from 100% fruit juice and the others from solid fruits.  One of the drawbacks to 100% fruit juice is that it doesn't contain the same does of fiber as solid fruit.  Fiber is an important because it helps you feel full.  For example an apple contains 3.5 grams of fiber and 100% apple juice contains only .2 grams of fiber.

2. Are strawberries a fruit?

Fruits by definition have their seeds on the inside. The plant produces a large red"false fruit" from its flower, and what we think to be seeds on the outside are the true fruits?  Each seed on the outside of a strawberry is a technically its own fruit.
