EQ of The Week

This weeks Purple Paw Award goes to a scholar in Mrs. Darling's class for her poster on different types of dairy foods.  Nicely done!!!

Essential Questions of the week February, 10th 2014

1. Does ice cream count towards your daily serving of diary?

Unfortunately, no. That's because a "serving of milk" needs to contain more than just calcium and or protein in small amounts. Ice cream includes many nutrients, but in such small amounts that you'd need to consume too much of it to have it qualify.

Don't get me wrong I love ice cream and eat it for dessert sometimes; however if you want to switch things up try a eating yogurt with fresh berries.

2. What is Calcium?

Calcium is a mineral that is essential in building strong bones and teeth and is found in high doses in dairy products.

Calcium also plays an important role in muscle contraction, transmitting messages through the nerves, and the release of hormones. If people aren't getting enough calcium in their diet, the body takes calcium from the bones to ensure normal cell function, which can lead to weakened bones.
If you got enough calcium and physical activity when you were a kid and continue to do so as a teen, you'll enter your adult years with the strongest bones possible.
Remember to eat some cheese, yogurt, and drink some milk in order to get your daily dose of calcium.
